Welcome

13th Annual International Astrophysics conference will be held once again in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, March 10 - 14. (Welcome Reception and Evening Registration begins Sunday, March 9).

The meeting entitled, “Voyager, IBEX, and the Interstellar Medium”, will follow the same format as before with 25-minute presentations punctuated by selected 40-minute invited talks that will explore various themes in greater detail. This decade may one day be viewed as the golden age in the exploration of the large-scale heliosphere and the local interstellar medium (LISM). Voyager 1 and 2 and IBEX are yielding remarkable new discoveries about the boundaries of the solar wind – LISM region and the interstellar medium. Hitherto, our basic understanding of the interstellar medium has been provided by telescope observations across multiple wavelengths that are typically integrated over many parsecs. For the first time, we have the opportunity with these three spacecraft to make detailed measurements of the interstellar plasma, energetic particles (charged and neutral), magnetic field, and plasma waves in situ or with very short integration distances. IBEX is providing insight into the global characteristics of the very local interstellar medium and Voyager 1 has just crossed the heliopause and is now in the interstellar medium. We can anticipate remarkable results and discoveries in the next decade as the new physics of the interstellar medium unfolds. Of course, the new observations are challenging theoretical models. The 13th Annual International Conference will focus on the physics of the solar wind – LISM boundaries and the emerging physics of the local interstellar medium. A particular focus will be on relating the new observations to current models of the local interstellar medium and by implication to the larger interstellar medium of our galaxy.
